Ghibli movies /Spirited away/
My early childhood years were full of Ghibli movies. Spirited away, My neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s delivery service, Princess Mononoke and Howl’s moving castle.
I always feel special about those films but was not sure what exactly was the meaning of the film. They are like a child cartoon but somehow feels like full of message for adults. So different from Disney, Pixar, Dream works films.
Luckily, Ghibli movies added to Netflix. Now is the time to rewatch them and find an answer to my uncertainty. What is the movie about?
Spirited away/2001/
Chihiro had a bland manner from the beginning. She is not a risk-taker, she just wants to live ordinary, calm and full in her own way. She didn’t want her parents to go through the tunnel and didn’t want them to eat other’s food without permission. Parents like adults have no fear and they are so full of themselves. On the other hand, it was a fate calling for Chihiro.
Chihiro had to save Haku, her destiny. If you’ve ever observed, Ghibli movies always show young love, Sen and Haku, Ashitaka and San, Satsuki and Kanta, Kiki and Tombo so on. Who knows when Chihiro was little, fell into the river and Kohaku saved her, ever since they destined for each other. Haku always remembered her name and didn’t let her forget her name and stay forever in ghost world.
The reason that Sen made everything right for everyone’s life is Sen’s personality. She never had an enemy, however, people tend to her bad or good if there is anything she could do for them she just does it without thinking twice. River ghost, coal dust balls, Yubaba’s son, even the faceless ghost. *Here comes ecological matter. If you remember the dirty one who is served by Sen at the beginning is river ghost. He is full of trashes and got stuck, changed to a stinky, dirty fat disgusting ghost. Sen observed and eagerly wanted to help. So pulled all trash, freed the river ghost. He is so grateful for Sen’s service and gave her medicine as appreciation. River ghost is referred to nature/river/ and people threw trashes(starts with bicycle and human needy products) pollutes a river lot. With that nature lost its own character to the monster. Sen cleaned all the trashes from water and it became clean again. Human’s brutal action to the earth is expressed by this scene.
The medicine from River god, she wants to give her parents and take them back home. But she gave her Haku and Faceless ghost. Oh, by the way, the famous facial ghost was no such a big role for me. He is just a lonely ghost, who looks for a friend, who has a pure and true heart like Sen, if Sen was greedy like others she had already been eaten by Faceless ghost. Sen helped him to find the right person Zeniba. The movie ended at peace for everyone.
Finally, she remembered Haku’s name and made deal with Yubaba, saved her parents and back to the human world. She looks back and wondering if it was real. Car covered by plant and Chihiro’s hair string, given and made by Zeniba shows that it was real. Yubaba insists Haku to cut into pieces after she let Sen and her parents back to their world. But since he remembered his name I hope that he finds a way to back to the human world and meet with his destined Chihiro in the future.
